Residency Period: February 2014
During her one-month residency, performance artist Dawn Kasper (born in Fairfax, VA, 1977; lives in New York and Los Angeles) will create a new project titled MATTER IS A WORD, A NOISE. Loosely inspired by a quote from the philosopher Alan Watts, this proposed work aims to culminate into a performance event, a lecture, and a sculptural environment. Through a raw, intuitive, creative process, Kasper will infuse her space with text based drawings, found objects, movement, and noise, all in attempt to generate a collection of data that marks the process of her research and development while in Miami. The space will be activated by a live, public performance by Kasper near the end of her residency.
Kasper has performed and exhibited her work widely at galleries and institutions, including the Migros Museum für Genenwartskunst, Zurich, CH (2005); Leo Koenig Inc., Projekte, New York, NY (2009); Tramway, Glasgow, SCT (2012); The Cohen Gallery, Granoff Center for the Creative Arts, Brown University, Providence, RI (2012); Blum and Poe Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2012); 2012 Whitney Biennial, The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (2012); Honor Fraser Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2013); and a forthcoming solo exhibition at David Lewis Gallery, New York, NY (2014).
